When I tried the Protonvpn app 1.10 it initated a L2tp connection then wireshark showed a IPsec connection. What I did not expect is it created a network interface inside the Mac's Network with no label of protocol. It strangely also asked for access to my keychain I bypass it and manually placed in credentials. My recommendation is not worth using because when I compared the use of the protonvpn app compared to Tunneblick, tunnelblick worked in a Mcdonalds wifi using the protonvpn credentials but the proton app did not. Right, do you need the VPN software to test a VPN, as in a VPN client? If so, any OpenVPN client will do; in terms of features, I highly suggest. It's based on Open VPN, works on both Windows & Mac, and it comes jam-packed with customisable features. The developer usually reponds the same day if you have any issues. Now, if you're looking for a VPN provider, I suggest you have a look at, which was created by a fellow Redditor from. It gives you a basic comparisson chart, as well as a VERY detailed chart of 95% of the current VPN offerings out there. Now, there is no such thing as a 'free' VPN, the old motto 'If the product is free, you're the product.' Holds true in this regard. When it comes to 'free' VPNs, data as a commodity comes into play, meaning that the provider is going to log everything you do once you connect to one of their servers. I suggest looking into paying monthly or quarterly for a reputable VPN service, if you don't want to pay for an entire year (although in my opinion, $30-$45 per year is a small price to pay for privacy). Most VPN providers offer their own clients, which are again mostly based on the OpenVPN client. Hope this helps - maybe x-post your question on for some more detailed input. If you wonder what sort of thing is available for free, this may be enlightening: One simple question: why in the world would someone spend time an d a lot of money to set up a service that's going to create a hassle for them, yet they give it away for free? It doesn't make any sense. There's some way they're making money on it. If you can't figure out how they're making money, stay the hell away from it. (Note: I'm talking about services, not software. There's a lot of trustworthy open source software; but not a lot of trustworthy free services. If you think you've found one, maybe you should think about it harder.) • • • •.
